Christmas lights from around the world

Check out this roundup of photos of Christmas decorations from around the world.. this makes me want to go on holiday right now!

Also, if you're interested.. here are the UK's best Christmas lights! Although, if you ask me, Cranleigh is definitely a winner this year! We had to go there to pick up a parcel the other day, and the sheer number of lights and decorations in that village is just amazing, it puts everywhere else to shame!

Horsham Snow - December 2010

Horsham snow - Day 2

The shops were already all out of bread and milk. It's unbelievable, it started snowing last Tuesday, and we only managed to get our car out for the first time on Saturday! It hasn't all melted yet either.. we still have a small snowman sitting on our wheelie bin!

A cool idea for an advent calendar

I was reading through some blogs this morning, and came across a great idea for an advent calendar on mypapercrane.. every day you open up a window, it contains a festive activity for the day, like making hot chocolate and watching a Christmas film, driving around and looking at all the Christmas lights, or making mince pies, things like that.. We might have to make one of these! It sounds like fun!

Who ever knew there were so many different types of fish?!

I honestly don't know where you would go about finding half of these..

Oily fishWhite fish
Anchovies
Carp
Eel
Herring (Bloater)
Hilsa
Jack (also known as Scad, Horse mackerel and Trevally)
Kipper (herring)
Mackerel
Orange roughy
Pilchards
Salmon
Sardines
Sprats
Swordfish
Trout
Tuna (fresh)
Whitebait
Brill
Catfish
Cod
Coley
Dab
Dover sole
Flounder
Flying fish
Gurnard
Haddock
Hake
Halibut
Hoki
John Dory
Lemon sole
Ling
Marlin
Monkfish
Pangas (also known as River cobbler, Basa or Pangasius)
Parrot fish
Plaice
Pollack
Pomfret (also known as Butterfish)
Red and grey mullet
Redfish (also known as Ocean perch or Rose fish)
Snapper (also known as Jobfish and Red snapper)
Rock salmon/Dogfish (also known as Flake, Huss, Rigg or Rock eel)
Rohu (also known as Ruhi)
Sea bass
Sea bream (also known as Porgy)
Shark
Skate
Tilapia
Tuna (canned)
Turbot
Whiting

Apparently, for good health you're supposed to eat at least two portions of fish per week, but no more than one portion of oily fish. The reason I stumbled across this list was that today we bought some Basa from Sainsbury's - a fictional fish if ever I heard one. It was actually really delicious! I looked it up, and apparently it's a Vietnamese Catfish.. I guess it might have put me off had it said that on the packet! I'm quite intrigued now though, I think I'm going to have to seek out all of these other weird and wonderful fish and see what they're like! Apart from Flounder and Dory of course, that's just mean. Lets hope no more ocean-based Disney films come out any time soon.

The Shard, London Bridge

So this is what The Shard looked like as of last Saturday. It's coming on! I'm very excited about going up and seeing the view from the top when it's all finished. Two years to go!

Pretty lights in London: Winter 2010

London was looking very pretty and festive on Saturday. I grabbed a few photos on my phone as we wandered around. This year the theme on Regent Street is The Chronicles of Narnia, I tried to get a picture of the glowy Reepicheep, but he was just too glowy unfortunately! Here are a select few others anyway..

A frozen yoghurt shop in Soho.. not strictly festive, but very pretty. I really want some of these lights, why don't you sell them Homebase?!?

Denbies

Denbies is looking quite bare for the winter, I walked up there the other day and it was full of old men hacking back the vines or tying them up, whatever it is they do in the winter. I'm assuming they work there? You never know though, I saw a sign advertising that you could pay to harvest the grapes for them, so it could be a gift experience for all I know!

Stepping Stones, Box Hill

I paid a visit to the Box Hill stepping stones last Thursday, I just love the lunchtime walk potential of Dorking. I started crossing them but then I realised the river was actually lapping over the stones on the far side and I didn't fancy going back to work with soggy shoes! If we get some snow soon, I might wander down there again, I bet it would look great in the snow!

Bio-Suit

Just saw this on TV - the next generation of spacesuit, termed a "second skin" is being developed by Dava Newman at MIT - quite interesting! Apparently it should be ready by about 2017. Check it out here.
